Blepharospasm due to face masking
Author's experience: Convulsive suppression taping
Yoshiharu Uno, MD, PhD
Due
to the COVID-19 epidemic, healthcare professionals need a mask that is in close
contact with the face. For high-performance masks such as the N95, the cramped
elastic cord presses against the skin on the face. This can put pressure on the
facial nerve.
I
have been wearing an N95 mask for several months now. This year, I started to
have convulsions in my left upper eyelid. At the
same time, I developed localized irritability to the left scalp. Irritability of the scalp is relieved when the mask is
removed. However, blepharospasm does not improve even if the mask is removed.
In response to this nerve compression, a cloth was placed
between the elastic cord and the skin to disperse the local pressure. However,
the effect was not sufficient compared to the complicated procedure. Therefore,
I tried a method to stop blepharospasm. This spasm could be alleviated by taping
on the eyelids. However, when the tape is removed, the spasms occur again.
